| LEGENDS
England is an old country and has thousands of
legends. Some of these legends, such as Robin Hood, are well known and
published. Some
parts of England have their own local legends, known only to people in
a small area. Hidden
England has obtained some of these lesser known local legends. Although
some of these are not technically legends, we have included them for
your enjoyment as well as stories, unusual coincidences and unexplained
happenings.
- The
Orford Merman
One
day around 1204 the Orford fishermen caught something unusually heavy
in their nets. They
were extremely surprised when they finally managed to get their catch
aboard because there, in the bottom of their boat, was a man staring
angrily back at them...
- The
Bells of Dunwich
It
is said that if, during stormy weather, you stand on the bleak stretch
of beach where the city center once stood, you can hear the bells of
the churches ringing underwater...
- The 'Yerk' Bells
No one
would consider going out in their boat, no matter how clear the day, if
someone heard a 'Yerk Bell" ring...
- The Ancient House
A
haunted shop that sells kitchenwares with the same name as a woman in
the 1600s who was convicted of witchcraft.... but there must be a
greater connection than both being called 'Lakeland'...
- Unresolved Mysteries and
Legends
A ship
wrecked up a deserted creek with terrible damage and her name removed
... we wonder what the story behind her is ... can you help us resolve
this local mystery? The mystery of the 'Olde English' on the
sign found in an ancient pub has been solved by one of our site
visitors - go and read his translation and discover what might have
been the very first advert for beer!.
We
are researching some more legends and when we have taken pictures we
will upload them. Please, bookmark and return. Thank you.
